if you look at what most of the pros are using as an example..(there have been plenty of articles and things done on it).. Most trail riders , racers etc run widths that are way to wide for them to have proper control.... especially kids,,, most would be way faster and have more control on slightly cut down bars than running full width 800 or even 780.. when I see 10 and 12 yo kids running 780 mm plus bars I do laugh as the equivalent would be me for my height 1.84 running like 1.1s and my arms would be straighter than a dhiller at a disco..
Height or arm width isn't the be all and end all. I'm almost 197cm tall with monkey arms and run 780mm. Thinking I might go to 770 to slice through trees a bit better.
Curtis Keene's bike check had 770 and he's tall too.
Wider also has an increased leverage and effect on turning sensitivity. Comfort is key. Ride a bit and see where you comfortably put your hands and use that as a gauge.
I’m 510 and run 700 to 725 depending on the bike. Anything less is too small for comfort but I prefer narrow bars for more line choice than larger for more comfort/leverage.
