Alright so I have an old hardtail trail bike that I wanted to make single speed I bought all the parts needed and I went to put the chain on and I was either a half link big or a half link short... Would a Half link chain like this fix my problem?

the half link chain may solve your problem, but it's heavy and may not tension your chain enough to keep it from being potentially dangerous as it could skip. singlespeed conversions for bikes that used to have a derailleur need to have a tensioner (basically a dummy derailleur) as they don't have slotted dropouts that allow the rear wheel to be slid forward/backward to tension the chain. this one from shimano may be one of the cheapest options - http://www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-Alfine-CT-S500-Chain-Tensioner - there are others but they're in the $50+ range.

there are other styles (like tensioners that hang from your chainstay) or cheap creative solutions like below. if you're riding on trail though, i would just get a dummy derailleur
