Hardtail setup help (dirt jump)

Ok so, I'm ordering a NS Majesty frame and I need to know what rear axle size I need. I've been looking at a Hope Evo 2 hub from chainreactioncycles.com, but I don't know if it will fit, and I also don't know how to make it singlespeed (if that's even possible). I'm aiming for a single speed ratio of anywhere from 9t-11t in the back and 28t-32t in the front. Where can I find a rear hub that will fit the Majesty? (Preferably in purple, and also 32h). I also want it to be disc-brake compatible.

MTB hub spacing (O.L.D 135 x 10mm)

So Hope makes a SS hub which is this here. I believe that would set you up.

I'm a BMX rider and our hubs are measured differently, sorry. And also, how do I know what disc brakes will fit? A certain Hope one? and what single speed cassette cog do I get?

11 tooth is the smallest that you can run on a standard MTB cassette hub. Chris King makes a killer stainless steel one that is worth the extra money at twenty five bucks or so. I used to run a 22-11 set up with one for years. My friend Jason discovered that on a few generic single speed hubs (I think Specialized and the REI brand both were the same.) you can remove the cassette and switch it with an Odessey 9 tooth driver. I think he still has a 9-18 gearing set up on one of his bikes. I haven't looked at the Hope link yet…

This is the single speed version which will require fewer spacers to set up, fit the frame, use disk brakes, and have a firmer grip than the QR version you were looking at.

What's your opinion on a 28/11 setup?

I always ran a two to one ratio on my dirt jumpers, but al LOT of riders, at least riders in Aptos, use heavier ratios. I'm a bit curious. Are you going to run some BMX cranks or MTB?

Do I need special cables for the Avid BB7 disc brakes?

Yeah. Any old BMX or MTB brake cable and housing. You could go super fancy colorful teflon coated BMX cable and housing, or just go down to the local and get some basic black and lube it well. All brake cables are pretty much the same size and strength. Deitys are a good choice for cranks, a perfect balance of both. Lots of Aptos riders use 'em and love 'em. And the owners are the nicest I've met in the business.

Would aluminum be better than chromoly for cranks?

I always rode 180 Profiles for dirt jumping abuse. And I wen't through a few pairs. I'd say go with the steel Deitys.

Will the Deity cranks work with a spline drive sprocket? Also, how long does the brake cable need to be in order for it to be wrapped around the headset/headtube like this:

I believe those 13 tooth freewheels are made to thread onto the small side of a flip flop BMX hub, which the Hope will not accommodate. Unless you know a very good machinist. The Hope hub has a standard MTB Cassette shape originally developed by Shimano I believe. As I said before, Chris King makes a very good stainless steel single speed sprocket that fits that standard in eleven to twenty tooth or so. I just know that eleven is the smallest. The Deity cranks do not work with spine drive er maybe so. If you mean the new fancy spline drive ones they have on the new XXX1 million dollar SRAM cranksets, no. If you mean the BMX standard spline drive sprockets that fit 19mm x 48? spline then I think so. Check their website for their spindle size. On the brake cable, you just have to do it. Mock it up man. take a piece of thin rope and wrap it around the way you like it. Measure it. Get it. A standard brake cable always worked for me, but if you need more for two wraps, you could get a tandem cable which is much longer. No problem with the questions, thats how to learn effectively. I miss the old Mechanics Corner section of these very forums.

So do I just slide the freewheel onto the Hope hub?

Also, do you have a recommendation for travel on the forks?

You should rename this post hard tail build help. So a freewheel like the 13tooth in your link contains the entire ratcheting mechanism and the single gear. Those thread on to a BMX style hub that's just a body bearings axle and flanges. The Chris King single speed sprocket slides on to a cassette containing the ratcheting mechanism and is an integral part of the hub. So the King cog slides onto the cassette and is held in place by a lock ring. It looks like there may be some spacers as well for chain line adjustment. As for the forks, I used to just run 80mm of very stiff travel, though around the Aptos crowd a lot of them are running 100mm. Any more than that and things can get awkward on hard landings or hard pumping up lips.

What stiffness do you recommend?

Oh and will this lever http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/avid-speed-dial-7-brake-lever/… accept this cable http://www.jensonusa.com/!zI37l1MrI1FpdNsGXlzWkA!/Jagwire-TandemTriplet… into this brake http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/avid-bb7-mechanical-disc-brake…

And how long is that cable?

http://www.jensonusa.com/Chris-King-Single-Speed-Stainless-Cog Is this the cog you were talking about? And all I have to do is slide it onto the hub?

Sorry for all the questions again.... Tongue

The stiffness of the fork is a pretty personal thing. Some ride almost locked out and some allow a lot more suspension movement. I pretty much always had coil spring forks, so I'd put in the heaviest spring available and give it a bit of extra compression damping to handle hard hits and pushing into lips.

Those brake components should all play nice together. I'm not sure how long that cable is and you might be better off trying a standard one from the local bike shop before paying so much for a tandem cable.

Yep, that's the King Cog. But I didn't realize how pricey they are. I guess I was working at a shop at the time, but I used to pay about $20. You'd do just fine with the Shimano ones at the bottom of the page for a lot less. But Pimp is Pimp. And yes the Hope and most MTB hubs have a specific spline to keep all the gears in line. The Hope Single Speed hub just has a shorter one than a standard rear hub. Then it should include spacers for the chain line and a lock ring to keep everything tight.
