I'm a novice mountain biker who bought a cannondale catalyst last year to get started and I'm ready to jump up to a more serious mountain bike. The terrain is mostly trails and some single track we ride. It's very easy going and we typically ride 12 to 15 miles a couple of days a week. I have a 27.5 now and have been happy with it. The dilemma is I have a kid seat on the back and mostly ride with her on there. I am wondering if the plus size tire will smooth out the ride some for her and make it a better experience without hampering the performance.

If we're talking 27.5 vs. 29 like the subject says, then a 29 inch wheeled bike should smooth out the ride by a bit for the little one. Well done in starting her young! If we're talking a plus sized 27.5 tire (27.5+) then the young-un should also have a smoother ride. If you want the option with the most smoothness for her and better performance for just you, I'd say go with a 29er. Personally I've never ridden either, but just thinking of the physics, that's my answer.

I have no input for the tire size either, but I want to commend you on bringing your little girl along. Cool

I had one of those bicycle trailers when my daughter was little. She flipped the F out when I put her in it for the first time; like I was putting her in jail or something!Laughing As soon as I moved the thing over to my bike to connect it, though, she realized it was a ride and it was all good! If it were me, I might invest in a baby trailer with as large wheels/tires as you can find.

I do think that plus sized tires would smooth out the ride for your daughter, but I don't like putting weight that high, esp. weight that can shift itself. I bought a basic baby trailer for my wife for Christmas and am excited to get out with it when it gets a bit warmer (though I'll probably be doing so on my commuter bike rather than mountain bike).
