I've decided to take the plunge into mountain biking. I ride motocross most weekends, but I am looking for something I can do for cardio and fun during the week after work. Anyways, I'll cut to the chase; I have the opportunity to buy a 2013 Trek Remedy 9.8 from a friend for $2000 or should I shy away from the 26" and get a 29er on that budget?

Also, any tips for someone coming from motocross?

Thanks for the help. I am trying to shorten the learning curve and not waste money figuring things out.

Man, I'd really consider using that $2k toward something newer that could be upgraded over time. Mountain bike geometry and technology has progressed a lot in the last four years. Every year or two for the past several we've see an improvement that's roughly equivalent to the impact fuel injection had in the moto world.

Consumer direct brands like Commencal and YT offer really good value to US consumers these days. That same $2k could get you this new 2016 Commencal Meta AM V4, for example, which has far more modern geometry, axle standards, wheel size, drivetrain, etc.

Vital reviews several bikes each year. You might find them helpful in your search.
