Well known for being pioneers of body protection in the moto and MTB world, Leatt has steadily expanded its gravity-focused line over the last several years by dialing in the combination of performance, comfort, and durability. In 2020, the South African brand officially launched its head-to-toe MTB line which included its first-ever women’s specific apparel. Since then, their products continue to evolve with added high-tech features. Unique to the 2022 launch, Leatt has added a full range of apparel that is made of sustainably sourced materials as well as shipping all products in biodegradable packaging. Over the last several months, we have put this large haul through all weather conditions to see how it performed on the trail.
Impressions and On-Trail Observations
MTB 4.0 Pants
Highlights
|
The Leatt MTB 4.0 Pants have a lightweight, yet durable feel to them. Laser-cut vents and MoistureCool mesh lining is placed strategically through the inner thighs and rear waist. The abrasion-resistant material is further reinforced with knee and shin brush-guard patches. The technical pre-curved race-fit allows for comfortable pedaling and space for knee pads. Alongside the water and dirt-repellent coating throughout, the seat panel and inner thighs are laminated 1000D fabric, making them suitable for all conditions. There are two, generous in size, zippered pockets up front with a key ring on one side. The rear waist pocket is designed to accommodate a phone and becomes unrecognizable while riding. On the trail, these pants have a comfortable relaxed fit and excelled in breathable, lightweight durability making them a great option for racing, bike parks, and all weather conditions. They never felt restrictive which is always a plus when considering what pants to spend the day in. Lining the inner rear waist is a silicone strip that provides a secure position. When put to test against mud, no moisture seeped through the laminated panels. The pants are mid-rise with a generous inseam to fit individuals with proportionally longer legs and they fit true to size.
MTB AllMtn 2.0 V22 Shorts
Highlights
|
The MTB AllMtn 2.0 Shorts are soft and lightweight with a stretch design. The inner thighs have laser-cut ventilations making them a good option for warmer days where breathability is a necessity. There are two large zippered pockets that allow you to pack a phone and other essentials. The pockets are stitched to the shell of the shorts to secure them in place while riding. On the trail, the shorts offer great airflow and provide a secure fit with the dual velcro waist adjustments and single snap closure system. The crotch depth of the shorts is shallow making them a low-rise fit. If you prefer mid to high-rise, then these shorts would not be a desirable option. The waist fits true to size.
MTB Gravity 4.0 V22 Long-Sleeve Jersey
Highlights
|
Pairing well with the race-fit pants, the MTB Gravity 4.0 Jersey is a high-tech option with welded seams and cuffs for a premium fit. Designed with a stretchy mesh fabric, the jersey stays cool, dry, and light throughout. There is laser-cut ventilation right below the neckline and on both sides of the chest. The elbows are reinforced with a thin brush guard layer for abrasion resistance and durability. There are two (nearly invisible) inner pockets along each side of the waist. On the trail, the jersey is comfortably snug while still leaving room for body armor. It excels in breathability making it a versatile and worthy option to be worn on race day, at the bike park, or enduro riding. The jersey fits true to size however, it does run long. Due to the nature of the race-fit and long design, the jersey felt most comfortable tucked in, however, it can also be worn untucked depending on rider preferences.
MTB Gravity 2.0 V22 Long-Sleeve Jersey
Highlights
|
A more casual alternative to the race-fit jersey is the MTB Gravity 2.0 Jersey. This long-sleeve is a part of the very first sustainably sourced apparel line that Leatt released this year. The jersey is made out of TENCEL, a biodegradable and sustainably produced fiber. The fabric has temperature regulating performance and is super soft to the touch. On the trail, the 2.0 jersey has a relaxed and comfortable fit while excelling in breathability. The jersey was typically worn on slightly colder days where a performance shirt was needed to stay cool while pedaling, and it did just that. When sweated in, the material was very quick to dry which separates it from other fabrics with a comparably soft feel. Seemingly casual, the jersey is still equipped with a goggle wipe and neck brace-ready collar. Similar to the 4.0 jersey, the 2.0 jersey runs longer and was worn tucked in but could be worn either way. Aside from length, the jersey fits a little baggy and long in the arms, so if a snug fit is desired, sizing down would be recommended.
MTB AllMtn 2.0 V22 Short-Sleeve Jersey
Highlights
|
Disguised as a casual tee, the MTB AllMtn 2.0 Jersey is the short sleeve version of the Gravity 2.0 and provides all of the same premium features and TENCEL sustainably sourced fibers. Distinct from the long-sleeve, the AllMtn 2.0 jersey has raglan sleeves (cut from the neck to armpit vs shoulder to armpit) making it feel seamless. This was the go-to piece for warmer days where that extra short-sleeve airflow was needed. The fit is similarly baggy like the Gravity 2.0 and could be sized down for a snug fit.
MTB AllMtn 2.0 V22 Jacket
Highlights
|
The MTB AllMtn 2.0 Jacket is packed full of unique features that help solve typical burdens while riding with an outer layer. The jacket folds into its own chest pocket making it very packable. That same chest pocket is zippered and large enough to hold a phone. The slash-style hand pockets located on the waist are a new addition to this year's design. On the trail, the magnetic hood system comes in handy by securing the hood to the back of the helmet when it isn't in use. The hood is highly adjustable to fit different sizes and shapes of helmets. For reference, the hood stayed secure with a small size helmet. While the jacket is not designed with the most breathable membranes, the added feature of the ClimbVent connector allows you to unzip the jacket and keep it from parachuting and flapping behind you. The inner mesh layer encourages airflow. The stretch-fit cuffs and hems keep unwanted cold air from entering the jacket, however, a drop tail hem would allow the jacket to fall around the waist better. Being more water-resistant than waterproof, the AllMtn 2.0 jacket is suitable for cold days with a potential light rain or dry snow. If you anticipate being in consistent rain for the whole ride, consider opting for a higher-rated waterproof jacket. Runs true to size and is long enough to keep from rising while in the riding position.
MTB Gravity 4.0 V21 Helmet (size small)
Highlights
|
The MTB Gravity 4.0 Helmet is a lightweight and competitively priced full face that completes a gravity-focused kit. The stealth helmet exceeds ASTM DH testing and certification standards. Leatt lines the inside of the helmet with their 360° Turbine technology, reducing rotational injury while also absorbing energy from hard impacts. In the incident of a crash, the breakaway visor enhances safety by minimizing the risk of head rotation. The inner liner of the helmet is quick-drying, breathable, and washable. On the trail, the helmet is very comfortable and lightweight (850g). We opted for this helmet on many e-bike laps with significant amounts of climbing and the full face never failed to impress in the breathability department. The Fidlock closure system is a convenient feature when taking the helmet on and off throughout your ride. Runs true to size with the added bonus of extra cheek pads to get that precise fit.
Knee Protection
There is no shortage of options when it comes to Leatt’s knee pad lineup. We received four different styles to test, ranging from lightweight to robust with a variety of features and protection ratings.
Knee Guard AirFlex Pro
Highlights
|
Starting with the lightest of the bunch, the Airflex Pro Knee Guard is Leatt’s most minimal design. The slim impact gel allows for all-day comfort while providing sufficient protection. On the trail, the knee pads are comfortable and breathable, making them a great option for pedaling on warmer days when you are hesitant to wear protection. Non-slip silicone strips are placed throughout the inner layer to minimize movement. Additional impact protection surrounds the knee cup in a stealth manner. The single-sizing feature contributes to a precise and comfortable fit. The Airflex Pro runs true to size.
AirFlex Hybrid Knee Guard
Highlights
|
Next, we have another lightweight and durable piece of protection, the Airflex Hybrid Knee Guard. Similar to the Pro model, the Hybrid offers the same impact gel technology, flexibility, and non-slip silicone strips throughout. The knitted fabric sleeve makes for a super soft and comfortable design however, they are not as breathable as the Airflex Pro. Engineered with a thicker fabric coupled with the hard-shelled knee cup, these excelled as a more durable option while still maintaining the benefits of a lighter-weight design. I opted for the Hybrid knee guards on rides consisting of significant pedaling and nastier descents where that extra protection is wanted. Single sizing is offered which allows for that precise, true-to-size fit.
3DF 6.0 Knee Guard
Highlights
|
The 3DF 6.0 Knee Guard is a visibly larger design made with a burlier, less flexible impact foam. Additional foam surrounds the hard-shelled knee cup for extra protection. Similar to Leatt’s other models, the inner layer of the knee guard is lined with silicone strips which secures the knee guard from slipping while on the bike. Heavier and stiffer by nature, this particular model comes in handy on E-bike rides and shuttle days when descending is maximized and pedaling is limited. The grouped sizing (s/m) does not allow a precise fit like the single sizing does, however, there is an adjustable strap on the back side to tighten if needed. The 3DF 6.0 Knee Guard runs small, so sizing up is recommended.
3DF 5.0 Zip Knee Guard
Highlights
|
Nearly identical to the 3DF 6.0, is the 3DF 5.0 Zip Knee Guard. Designed with the same 3DF impact protection, the 5.0 has an abrasion-resistant knee cup versus the hard shell. This specific model is equipped with the convenience of a zipper so you can take them off without removing shoes. On the trail, these felt restrictive due to the stiff seams surrounding the zipper, designating them to downhill-only conditions. Consistent with the 3DF 6.0, this model also runs small and should be sized up for a comfortable fit.
3.0 Flat V22 Shoe
Highlights
|
Moving on to shoes, Leatt sent us a pair of women’s 3.0 Flats to test. The performance shoe offers durable upper construction, extra toe and heel protection, and a medium-stiff profile making it a supportive option for enduro and downhill riding. The outsole is designed with Leatt’s RideGrip rubber compound which provides adequate grip however, in comparison to my go-to Specialized 2FO shoe, the 3.0 Flats lack that super tacky feel when put to test against trail chatter. The waffle construction of the sole allows for precise pedal placement while the heel and toe mud channels effectively ditch any excess mud. When taken through wet weather or the occasional creek, they wicked water and were quick to dry when any amount of moisture did seep through. The mid-height inner ankle design improves comfort and protection while on the bike without feeling bulky. Overall the 3.0 Flat is a comfortable and sturdy shoe that is suitable for rowdy trails and all weather conditions. Fits true to size with some extra room in the toe box.
MTB 1.0 GripR V22 Glove
Highlights
|
For gloves, Leatt offers two color options for the MTB 1.0 women’s specific design. These are lightweight and breathable, being a good option for those hot summer pedals. When sweated into, the MicronGrip palm continues to maintain its grip and placement on the handlebar. The thumbs are equipped with a thin, towel-like fabric that is handy for wiping lenses and sweat. After being used and abused for nearly a season, the gloves have surprisingly held up past their expected lifespan. All around, a great lightweight and durable pair of gloves. They do run big so I suggest sizing down for that second-skin feel.
MTB V22 Socks
Highlights
|
To wrap up Leatt’s 2022 head to toe line up, we were sent the unisex MTB socks. The 6” sock comes in black and gray with mellow graphics. On the trail they are quick to dry and soft to the touch, delivering all day comfort. The mid-lightweight design provides breathability and warmth in varying weather conditions making them a go-to piece. Runs true to size.
