Introduced in 2019, the current version of the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon saw Fox invest in a multi-directional impact protection system of their own, called "Fluid Inside". Two years later, Fox is updating the RPC and moving it over to MIPS, which was already featured on the Speedframe, Dropframe and Proframe lids. Check out a few cut-away views of the new helmet below, then keep reading to learn more.
When we pitted the 2019 version against 8 other high-end full-face options, we were impressed by the safety features while the relatively hefty weight and a tendency to run a bit warm were noted as points of weakness. The new 2021 version of the RPC inherits many features from the 2019 version, such as the all-important multi-density EPS layer and the carbon fiber outer shell. The magnetic visor (MVRS) now makes way for a set of breakaway visor screws, but it is still not height-adjustable. The visor is designed to flex before breaking away to reduce rotational forces. The injected mesh vent screens are still used to keep debris out of the ventilation ports.
What about the fit then? The previous version of the RPC ran pretty much a full size smaller than other Fox helmets, and although Fox claimed that the liner would compress over time we always had to size up. We usually wear a Large helmet size and after our experience with the 2019 RPC, we requested an XL to be on the safe side as it was indicated this new RPC "runs about a 1/2 size small." Thankfully we did. We received this helmet a day ago, so our impressions are slim at this point. The XL was a snug pull over the ears, but fit very nicely and securely once on our head. The padding is ample and very comfortable. The attention to detail and finish is indicative of a premium product.
The pads and liner remove easily for cleaning or for post-crash assistance. The size XL 2021 RPC helmet we received weighed 1219g, which is about 100g lighter than the size Large RPC we received back in 2019. Clearly work has been done on reducing weight with the lightweight MIPS system replacing the Fluid-based elements on prior version.
A blingy carbon fiber D-ring and chrome-and-sparkle paint job on our Repeater colorway are nice touches to round out the $500 DH lid. We'll get some laps in with the 2021 Fox Rampage Pro Carbon helmet and report back with details soon.
