My custom Marino fat bike has arrived! Room for two bottles in the triangle, plus another on the top tube or a bag.

I built up some inexpensive Framed hubs with WTB i40 rims and Goodyear Escape 2.6" tires for summer 29+ mode (tires measure 2.7" on these rims).

Added a CYC Photon mid-drive motor and 52v 14ah battery (Dec 2023)

How is it as an ebike? Also do you have your 29 ers laced onto fatbike hubs or is there some type of adapter you use? Planning on a very similar build but a little on the fence about having to run two wheelsets

I had 29er rims laced to fat hubs, no adapters. I actually sold those wheels/tires, but they were great, just had someone make me a great offer when they weren't even for sale and I took it. I am in the process of lacing up a new set of 29ers.

The wheels and tires are an initial investment, but I can't afford to spend $300+ every year on fat tires, I would much rather spend $120 on 29er tires.

So I haven't run the ebike with 29ers yet, but it is fantastic with the fatty setup. I love it.

TLDR - you should give it a go! Maybe go 157 rear spacing.

Long version-

Not a ton of miles, but yes! Trails finally started opening up recently after the spring mud. I love the bike, I'll add a picture with the 29+ wheels. I still need to do some tweaking with my suspension, the fork is too damped fully open and the shock is too soft fully closed. The fork isn't too bad and I wouldn't open it up much more anyway, but the shock likely needs a custom tune, as I'd like it to ride fully open the way it is currently riding at fully closed.

I got another frame from Marino this spring, a 180/170mm travel mullet (noon-fat) and it actually pedals so well I might not ride the fat in the summer as much as I thought I would.

But it would fit a big battery under the top tube and a CYC Photon mid-drive motor, so I'm thinking a full suspension fat EMTB might be in my future. Total cost would still be under ~$3500, which is cheaper than any other EMTB and would be year round fun and comfort with traction for days!

I've been seeing more folks go the route of Super Boost rear spacing (157mm) and DH bottom bracket (83mm shell) on their custom Marino's, much like the RSD Sergeant which can still run big 27.5x4" tires but a more comfortable Q-factor.

I hadn’t thought about superboost spacing but it kind of makes sense. Main reason i would be doing 197 is so all my parts could transfer over from my RSD Mayor. All the other FS fatties are so expensive. Id love to get a Foes Mutz but want to try the Marino first as proof of concept before i drop 3,000 on a frame(after paint). 

I only would likely go 27.5 x4 (what i run now on my Mayor) and want to do 29x3 so a 157 could work, it would just be a whole build.

Sweet! I think this is the only Marino full fat online anywhere. I’ve been thinking about having one built. Any cons? Are you stoked on it? I am wanting for year round use on Midwest single track.

I wish I could give you more detail on how it rides, but my shock died after about a half mile! Wouldn't extend beyond half stroke, so I had to ride back to the car with 60% sag. That first half mile felt great though!

I based it on my 2020 Stumpjumper geometry plus some extra reach. I think it will be sweet for year round riding here in Minnesota, I have a second set of hubs that I'll be lacing to some 29er rims. With the sliding dropouts, I should have room to run 26x4.8, 27.5x4.5 and 29er+ and be able to set the chainstay as short as the tires allow (435-450mm). 

The cons are, it weighs 43lbs, but I don't have any fancy expensive bits on it, it's all about durability for my 250lb (without gear) self. So weight weenies need not apply.

Marino also tested clearance with a crankset that must have a larger q-factor than my 165mm GX set, so they did hit the chainstays. Marino asked me to I use a vice grip to put a small dimple (common on steel frames anyway for chainring or tire clearance, structurally fine) on both drive side and non-drive side so I could test ride it before he sends me a warranty replacement, in case I wanted to change anything else. 435mm chainstay with 197mm hub and clearance for 4.8" tires is a big ask, and to only be off by 1mm on each side is well within reason. If I had a different crank, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but I hate cranks longer than 165 and SRAM GX is basically the only fat option.

All of that to say, this is my second Marino and I'll be getting more! I love it, at least for as short as I was able to ride it (shop just informed me I need to replace the shock, it's toast). As long as you don't mind the weight or the wait, I think it is a blast putting together a one-of-a-kind bike that is actually really affordable and rides great!

Thanks for the reply i may reach out again come spring to see how it fares on dirt. I’ve got an rsd mayor v5 now that id like to swap parts from. The 197 rear and race face cranks i have i may need to look into if it will fit on a full fat Marino. Do they only do elevated chainstays with the full fat?

I requested the elevated stays as they are stiffer than the lower/regular ones and I'm heavy. As far as I know, he'll do whichever you want. If you can provide the width or Q-Factor of your cranks, that would probably help him check. Each bike is unique and handmade, so your fitment could be slightly different than mine even with the same requested specs. We are talking such a small amount in one very specific area of the frame.

He said he had clearance with the cranks he used to test fit everything, so my GX must be just a couple mm narrower (I believe they are 206mm from crank to crank). If they were 210 crank to crank, I probably wouldn't have had an issue, and 2mm per side is teeny tiny.
