About Me
I subscribe to the Velo Orange philosophy:
Most cyclists don't race, yet they ride uncomfortable racing bikes and try to go too fast and so miss much of the world around them. Our emphasis is on a more relaxed and comfortable style of riding, and on refined bikes that are comfortable on a century ride, an inn-to-inn tour, or even on a ramble down your favorite dirt road.
My perfect weekend would be to attend the NAHBS (North American Handbuilt Bike Show) an annual event held in different cities each year. You get the best of all the bicycle builders in one place, once a year.
My favorite builder / restorer is Peter Weigle (J.P. Weigle) in Lyme, Connecticut. His builds epitomize the best of the French Constructeur style, modern frame construction embellished with beautiful vintage components. This is a style I favor in my own resto-mods.
At present I am most involved with The Chicago Taildraggers bicycle club. We have an annual bike raffle to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Last year we raised $1200 for that cause. I have also hosted two rides in the past that benefitted Working Bikes Chicago and West Town Bikes.
In addition to my restorations I’ve developed quite a passion for wheel building. I am somewhat single minded in this pursuit; typically building 32-36 spoke wheels (3 cross pattern) on modern clincher rims using mostly vintage hubs. When I do build on modern hubs they are usually Sturmey Archer of some variety. I build a lot of 3 speed internal geared wheels.
