2023 Specialized Stumpjumper Mullet XC | Downcountry | Trail build | 24.6 pounds
Parts
General Info
Weight is without pedals and it not a typo. With sealant in both tires. This is the least-obnoxious color scheme of my fleet. The color of the frame carries enough weight. Nearly all the parts were from the backup bin except the fork was ripped from my hardtail as I found a 34 Performance for stupid cheap to slap on that. This will likely be the bike I ride the most as so many rides are wedged in close to home and in a short amount of time on hills instead of big mountains. Frame is stupid light and stupid cheap on sale, and the build is reasonably light but nothing crazy. Brakes will toss you out the front door, and tires have enough grip to be slappable (already tried.) The suspension is amazingly plush and feels like more than 135mm. I could see why some might not like the plushness but in the great NorthEast it is appreciated. My calcs put the weight savings of the mullet setup at about 120-140g between the rim and tire. Tire dependent of course. I would venture to say that realistically, this is the type of build that many people should be riding (with beefier tires if it is your one-bike) as everyone around here is riding way more bike than the trails that I see them on. Most of us don't live within 30 mins of world-class mountain bike trails with 1k+ vert runs at our disposal. Even at my weight, I don't NEED a 36 or shock reservoir to charge single Black Diamonds with reckless abandon. My go-to DHF EXO trail tire combo would add about 500g to this build but the bike remains way lighter than anything I see offered OEM. The rims are 30mm and have put up with serious pounding when they were on my Stumpy EVO. A V3 Oneup dropper at 150mm would actually still shave weight from the bike so I might eventually go that route. This thing will have no problem on double blacks under any competent rider. I am 5'8" 185 pounds and ride fairly aggressively for reference.
