2021 ORBEA WILD: Anatomy Of A Custom Build
Earlier, I noted that I finally got out on the new e-bike. However, I did not discuss the changes that we made to this fully-customized sled. Follow along for a deep dive into a crazy e-bike build:
I wanted this bike to be something that provided minimal help on the hills -- so I could get a workout in -- but still allow me to absolutely blitzkrieg the descents. We started with a MyO version of the carbon Wild M10. This allowed me to choose my paint scheme; it also allowed me to option a Fox 38 160mm fork & Float X2 shock.
With this solid platform, we went to work. Here are the components that we added/changed:
+ Reverse Engineering carbon bar
+ Deity Cavity stem
+ Shimano XT 4 piston brakes
+ Shimano Deore shifting
+ PNW Loam grips & dropper lever
+ Headset Spacers: Color-matched Deity & Origin-8
+ Velo saddle
+ HT magnesium pedals
+ KMC hollow pin chain
+ Rear Tire: Maxxis Assegai DD
+ Front Tire: Maxxis DHF EXO+
+ Wheels: Session hoops, custom-laced to Session hubs. The front is 29". The rear wheel has been switched from a 29r (stock rear wheel size) to a 27.5 to make the bike a "mullett." This has slackened the front end & dropped the BB by 3/4".
+ Galfer rotors: 6 bolt, 203mm F&R.
+ Chainstay Wrap: rubberized red...to shed trail debris.
+ Seat Stay Wrap: standard material (but it has skulls on it!)
The Wild's suspension is currently set up extremely plush, to make it REALLY shreddy on the descents. It absolutely digs-in on the corners. It's not poppy at all...perfect for staying glued to the ground for max speed. After getting used to the bike, I may use the shop's Shock Wiz to dial the rear suspension & make it a bit more poppy. All this depends on how I choose to ride the bike.
PS: Thanks to Mal, for these insane photos! If you need pro shots taken, go to 1611 Photography!
