The Santa Cruz Tallboy 29 is a class leader with its VPP 3 suspension. The Virtual Pivot Point produces a playful, poppy personality (like the alliteration?) that’s confident at speed.
2017 has been very exciting for base level kits. Budget conscious 1x11 options, improved hub and rim combinations and high performance suspension, albeit without some of the fancier coatings.
One of the best upgrades possible is the modern adjustable seat post. The BikeCo R1X Option kit features the RockShox Reverb Stealth with internal routing.
The Fox Performance rear shock offers riders easy rebound and compression controls. Compression is controlled with a 3 position lever with Open, Medium and Firm options. These VPP bikes climb excellent in Open and Medium – Firm is almost too stiff for my taste but excellent on longer road climbs, etc.
The new Fox Rhythm fork is an absolute game changer for budget builds. This is a fork that experienced riders will appreciate the on trail performance. Compression is controlled with the blue lever on the right stanchion. Tuning range on the Fox products is impressive.
Along with the adjustable seat post the R1X Option build features SRAM Guide R 4 piston brakes for improved trail personality.

I enjoy 4 piston brakes on my builds as typically I can run smaller rotors to reduce initial brake bite to maximize modulation control.

BikeCo also updated the R1X with the RockShox Reverb Stealth adjustable post, because, well, every rider should have an adjustable post… If you’re new to the sport adjustable posts improve performance, comfort and safety. Ask your buddies, it’s well worth it.
