Sunday December 18th was the 2nd round of the X-FUSION/CCCX "SUPER D" SERIES - they requalify it from DH to Super-D as it's not technical enough and there is quite a bit of pedaling involved. Also, it is now USA Cycling sanctionned.
CCCX Super-D races at taking places in Toro Park near Salinas, CA - just across the highway from where Sea Otter Classic happens. For those familiar with Sea Otter DH course, the CCCX Super-D are quite similar: hard pack sand, lots of ruts, water bars jumps and dirt at the bottom - not to forget the wind at the top of the course that want to blow you off your bike.
The left ridge was used in this 2nd round of the series and we started a little higher than usual: for the first 3/4 mile it's high speed fireroad with flat turns hidden by manzanita bushes, then you get into the singletracks with tight switchbacks and water bars that boot you a little. The last half mile is a "faux-plat" that goes from fireroad to singletrack to grassy field with nasty chicane to slow you down before the finish line. This part was torture: you come flying down the singletracks and haven't used your quads as much as you should have and you have to sprint but this little incline burns you quads so bad that you want to sream to relieve a bit of the pain.
CCCX Super-D is a really fun event, where you hang out with your buddies and meet really cool people from all over northern California. It's perfect for every ages and abilities - you see DH rigs as well as XC bikes but the weapon of choice is a 5" or 6" of travel bike.
It's growing at every event and this time over 100 men showed up, a dozen women and 45 groms.
Santa Cruz bikes took the highest spots on the podiums for both Pro Men and Pro Women with Kiran McKinnon and Mary Moncorgé.
