Screenshot 2024-02-26 at 3.47.34 PMThis beauty is collecting dust in my shed and I have a decision to make in getting it rideable again: keep its original intention as a dual crown, 26" downhill smasher, or turn it into a mini-mullet with a long travel single crown? I don't think I'd go full on Remi and put a 24"x2.8 wheel on the back, but the frame rides a bit small for me so it'll be a freeride park/shuttle machine either way.

Getting the fork serviced will be about the same price as buying a 190mm Domain, so opening up this discussion to people who might have some good ideas one way or the other. Also, hit me up if you want to buy!

Good ol iron horse. Used to regularly see ones like that for sale near me for a dime a dozen. Well, not actually that cheap, but you get the idea.

If that were mine I’d keep it very similar to how it is now, but that’s only because I’ve never ridden a mini mullet and have no clue what they feel like.

Also, that’s a solid ding in the downtube lol (assuming it’s not a trick of the light). That things seen some action.

Had a buddy get one powder coated and threw a bunch of new parts on it, put in an angle set and a 27.5 front with the 26 rear. Takes a bit to stand out in the whistler bike park but every man and his dog would comment on that thing.

Luckily they didn't skimp on tubing size with these frames! Still solid, can't say the same for the tree I hit though

Any context on how it rides with the 27.5 front? I love my 29/27.5 mullet and would hope those characteristics translate to a mini setup, but obviously quite a few factors.

Do you know what angleset he used?

Slackened it out 1 degree, said it was awesome for ripping park laps.

Had a Sunday a long time ago, used it with a sc-fork and a normal headset, then put a dc-fork with a -2 angleset and then a -3 custom angleset. Although it was fun even with the sc-fork, the Sunday’s a race machine - it requires a dc-fork to really shine. Mine was 65 HA originally, so the -3 angleset put it around 62ish, had a friend that managed to get a custom -4 angleset which was at the limit, but his frame was 66 HA originally, so we were on par. Having so slack HA really transforms it!

Do you know which headset he ended up using? Trying to figure out the right headset components to accommodate a tapered steer tube and an -1.5-2 degree angleset

Update on this one - RS Domain 180mm with a Works Components -2 degree headset have been installed, and this thing is already so much fun to ride. It'll be getting some proper brakes next, but the shock needs to be replaced. I'm looking at a Marz bomber coil which is crazy cheap and will get the rear end back to proper squish.

Problem is, getting the existing shock out is turning out to be very difficult. Top bolts are easy, but the bottom bolts go through a linkage axle and require removing an expanding bolt and other things I can't fully figure out. Terrified of doing something wrong in this process because finding replacement parts is crazy hard (this is a 2008 model from a company that basically doesn't exist now) and totaling the frame by stripping something is a very real outcome if this isn't done right.

Anyone taken apart the lower linkage on an Iron Horse Sunday before and can give me some guidance on how to do it? So stoked to be able to ride this as my freeride/park mini mullet pet project bike and am literally 1 component away from living that dreamIMG 2030

Can you attache some photos of eahc side of the lower shock mount? There was a couple of different variants, i think some had a locking nut to hold the assembly you had to back out before removing the actual shock pin. Its been a very very long time since I removed one though! I remember ridemonkey had a huge thread on Sundays though which will probably have what you need

As I recall you also had to remove the crankarms and chainguide too. It was a pain.

Remove the 4mm hex bolt on the Non Driveside first - this loosens the expanding portion of the shock bolt

Remove the 4mm hex bolt on the Driveside (this can be tricky as the shock bolt will sometimes just spin with the bolt. When this has happened to me, I've had to tighten the non driveside back up so it expands the bolt and keeps it still, and then just loosen off the driveside bolt a tiny bit, then remove the NDS bolt and follow the process as normal). If that doesn't work I've also been very careful with a drill and a 4mm hex bit and almost used it like an impact driver to break the bolt loose - but if you do this make sure the hex bit and bolt is in good condition and not rounded off.

Thread a long M6 threaded bolt into the Driveside and use it to tap the shock bolt out towards the non driveside with a rubber mallet - make sure you thread it in a good few turns so you don't risk damaging the bolts

Installing the shock bolt is way less hassle, just tap the bolt back in from non driveside to driveside, again using the long M6 bolt.

Tighten driveside bolt to 13nm

Tighten nondriveside to 13nm

I'd reccomend buying some hardened stainless steel replacement 4mm hex bolts for these before you re-assemble, rather than use the soft alloy ones. They're 4mm x 16mm countersunk hex bolts I think but just measure the length to confirm when you get them out.

There's a huge thread for these frames over on Ridemonkey if you get stuck

^That's a great explanation. Also, if this hasn't been posted it may be helpful.

If you still haven’t gotten the Marzo coil shock, I’d suggest first checking if you can get a cheap air shock, something like a Vivid Air or better yet a Manitou Swinger/Evolver. Sunday’s linkage was regressive at the end if memory serves right, so the progressive nature of air shocks pairs well - back in the day I rode my Sunday with a Manitou Evolver shock and the combo was wonderfull. A lot of adjustments, plus the easiness of changing air volume to make it harder or softer on the fly, plus some lightness. Together with the air shock and some lighter wheels and tires (but still dh-ready) I managed to get it from 18kg to 16,low-something! Wink
