AXS DH?

The Plan:

Am planning a bike park build, and want my bike to be able to pedal but also barspin, and my dumb brain came up with AXS DH... It has been done before but I have only heard of moderate success shifting correctly in only 3 or 4 gears. I think I can do it better.

Heres what I've got:

Derailleur: Clutch on XO1 and GX dh derailleurs is the same as a GX axs cassette, so I should be able to easily swap the cage to short cage.

Cassette: To work with the 12 speed spacing of the derailleur with 7 gears, instead of cutting an XD cassette like I have seen done before, I plan on taking the bottom 7 gears of the NX cassette (HG Driver) and using the spacer off the back of a GX DH cassette to space the gap, may need a few more spacers or some filing to make it work but we'll see...

Chain: 12spd chain to match the cassette + Derailleur

Problems:

Overshift: Will I be able to correctly limit the AXS derailleur to stop it shifting over 7 gears, also will this limiting put undue stress on the servos, and is there a way to stop this?

Jockey Wheels: Will the 7 speed jockey wheels of the DH cage work with a 12 speed chain? If not what are some possible solutions?

The Future:

If I can fix the problems, its on to buying. Once everything is bought and tested I will upload a post confirming if the system works with detailed instructions for anyone thinking about something just as dumb.

I’ve done it using a sram red axe road system. I used a longer limit screw. The problem is that when it hit the top limit screw it would freak out for about 1 second then you can start down shifting.

I ended up going back to cable because the charging battery got annoying and it was very bad at holding chain tight. But that’s just because it was from road group set.

Axs mech and mechanical dh xo1

Swap the short cage from mechanical to axs

The small stop knuckle bolt will need filing down a bit

Job done. Takes 1 hour at most

The problem with that is the cassette spacings for XO1 dh are different to that of 12 speed I believe. Would be stoked if you could prove me wrong, though. Also the fact that an Xo1 dh block cassette costs as much as a small house, but can always make do with GX DH if the spacings work

How come you chose to use the road system? Was the top limit freak out a problem?

I used it because it comes short cage. I didn’t know about the low tension though.

The limit wasn’t that big of a deal because I wasn’t shifting a ton. But you will hear it for like 1-2seconds then you can shift again.

I built my Frameworks downhill bike with full GX AXS transmission because I wanted to be able to use it occasionally without having to drive a minimum of 4 hours. Works great overall but I don’t know of a way could limit to an ideal set of gears without just changing it back to the Saint I originally put on. If you do figure out a way I’d definitely be interested.

I will let you know, but from my perspective this would be impossible with transmission due to the design, and only possible (if doable at all) with a regular AXS Derailleur.

Appreciate it and I think you’re right. I have an old AXS XX just sitting in a box in my garage so I’d use that. I probably should have mentioned that to make it clear.
